THE MONT AVIC NATURAL PARK

The natural park of Mont Avic is a protected natural area and has an area of over 5'747 hectares and is the closest from the Maison la Corte (Champorcher 20 min by car).  The first regional natural park in the region, after the Gran Paradiso National Park, created in 1989 and expanded in 2003, is extended between the Champdepraz valley and the Champorcher Valley, crossed by the Chalamy stream, in a secluded position compared to the great tourist routes of the Aosta Valley.

The high sharp peaks of the Avic (3003 metres), Iverta (2936 metres) and Glacier (3186 metres) mountains separate the Champdepraz valley from the Champorcher valley. In the park there is the largest forest of hooked pines (Pinus mugo subsp. uncinata) of the Aosta Valley: over 980 hectares.

There are several paths in the park: the most frequented is the one that starts from the valley of Champorcher and through the Colle del Lago Bianco goes down into the valley of Champdepraz, with in the background the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa, touches the Lac Blanc, flanked by the Rifugio Barbustel (2200 meters)and Lac Cornu, to then reach the Gran Lago (Grand Lac), the largest natural lake in the Aosta Valley.

Along the Champorcher Valley you can reach Lake Misérin (22 hectares) at 2576 meters above sea level, and along the ancient hunting road of the Savoy, the Fenêtre de Champorcher, a pass located at 2826 meters above sea level that allows access to the Urtier valley. There are other paths that start from the hamlets of Chevrère and Veulla (capital) of Champdepraz, at an altitude of 1300 meters, and touch other lakes, other forests and some evidence of mining activities of the past.
